About Transformative Therapy

About Us

Transformative Therapy was built with a clear vision: to center the mental health needs of those whose wellness is often not fully considered.

Transformative Therapy was founded by Parker and Rahjah Curtis-Evans and opened on March 1st, 2021.

Where we offer therapy

We offer in-person therapy in Lansing, MI, at our office inside Wild Ferns Wellness Center. Our office is located on the Lansing/East Lansing line and just minutes from MSU. There is a CATA bus stop a half block away from us. Our office is wheelchair accessible, and there is an elevator.

Prefer to meet from home? We offer online therapy across Michigan, so you can work with an identity-affirming therapist wherever you are in the state.

We are located inside Wild Ferns Wellness Center, right on the Lansing/East Lansing line and just minutes from MSU. In-person appointments are available in Lansing, MI, and virtual appointments are available anywhere in Michigan.

Today, Transformative Therapy has a growing team, all of whom hold the diverse identities of the clients we serve. Our therapy office has eight therapy offices, a sensory room, a food pantry, a free clothing area, and harm-reduction supplies.

Why we started

Rahjah and Parker know how hard it is to find safe, quality care where you can show up as your whole self. Rahjah is Black, Queer, and Neurodivergent, and Parker is Transgender, Disabled, and Neurodivergent. They both have had health care or therapy appointments where they experienced direct discrimination or where the provider claimed to be affirming but acted in ways that were uncomfortable.

After so many disappointing experiences, they found themselves tired. Tired of care that did not help, care with assumptions, care where safety felt reserved for privilege, care that had them leaving feeling worse than when they arrived.

During the early days of the COVID pandemic, they found a deep calling together to make a change that would put first those whose wellness is often last to be considered. March 1st, 2021, Rahjah and Parker officially opened Wild Ferns Wellness Center and Transformative Therapy.

The bigger picture

Living within a marginalized identity takes a real toll on our well-being and mental health. Much of that toll comes from minority stress, the ongoing strain of moving through systems of oppression like racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, xenophobia, ageism, colorism, fatphobia, religious oppression, colonialism, and white supremacy. These systems don’t operate in isolation. The more marginalized identities you hold, the more they overlap, and the heavier and more complex that stress becomes

That’s only half the story, though. The same communities that carry these burdens are also deep sources of strength, care, and joy. Connection, chosen family, cultural pride, and belonging protect mental health and help people not just survive but thrive.

Resilience isn’t only individual toughness; it’s collective, built through community, healing, and the everyday joy of being fully yourself among people who get it. We honor that strength as much as we tend to the wounds, because both are true, and both deserve care.

“Research shows that when people can work with a therapist who understands their lived experience, they’re more likely to feel safe, build trust faster, and stay in therapy long enough for it to help. The majority of our team holds LGBTQIA2S+ and other marginalized identities as well.”

All of our therapists are person-centered. We see clients as people, unique human beings, to connect with, support, and guide towards healing, self-knowing, and personal growth. In therapy with us, you’re seen as a whole, layered human being, never just someone with a diagnosis and a checklist of symptoms.

When you start therapy here, your therapist already has experience working with people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, queer, trans, non-binary, Two-Spirit, or still figuring it out.

If you are Black, Indigenous, brown, or another person of color, your therapist may or may not share your exact background. We have some therapists who are BIPOC and are looking forward to more joining our team in the future. If you decide to work with a white therapist, we want you to know that our whole team trains continually in anti-racist, anti-oppressive care, and we hand-picked that training ourselves.

If you are neurodivergent, you already know your brain is one of a kind. We have many ways to make therapy fit how you actually think and feel. And there’s a good chance your therapist is neurodivergent too.

“Transformative Therapy is a place where you can feel safe, affirmed, and seen. Where you can be the complex, multi-layered person you are, and get support from a skilled therapist who is dedicated to making sure you feel heard.”

We Prioritize Ongoing Learning

Thinking about therapy and wondering, Will they understand me? Will I have to educate them? We’re intentional about ongoing training in anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive care, led by experts who share our identities. Since 2025, we have organized 20 required trainings for our team focused on subjects such as supporting trans clients, Latine clients, cross-racial therapy, sex therapy, supporting kinky clients, safety planning without involving the police, harm reduction, and more.

Your Comfort is Not a Burden

Have you ever avoided therapy because the expectation of direct eye contact is too uncomfortable? We get that! Fidgets, coloring books, sand trays, Play-Doh, sketch pads, and other activities are out for you to use as you please in our therapy rooms. Some of our therapists also offer sessions in our sensory room! Direct eye contact is not required, and safe stimming is welcome.

We Thought of You for Every Step

From our appointment request and intake forms to our food pantry, therapy rooms, and the center where our therapy practice is located, Wild Ferns Wellness Center, every step has been designed to center you. When you reach out to us, from our admin team, to our intake coordinator, to our therapists, you are talking to someone who almost certainly shares one or more of the identities you hold. Being ‘different’ is normal here, and that is just part of what makes therapy with us wonderful.

You Can Bring Your Whole Self

Who you love, how you think, how you identify, where you come from, and what you’ve lived through are all part of who you are and how they overlap. That mix is its own experience, and you can bring all or any of it to therapy with you.

We Value Feedback

If you have suggestions or feedback on ways we can make our practice even more accessible, let us know. We value feedback so much! If you had an experience with us or one of our therapists that did not sit well with you, please reach out. We will listen. This is so important to us. Our Director, Parker, can be reached directly at parker@transformativetherapycs.com. Please include how you would like to hear back: email, phone call or virtual meeting.

Insurance and fees

We work hard to make therapy as accessible as possible. We accept several insurance plans, including several Medicaid plans, and offer a grant to cover therapy, as well.

Meet your future therapist

Research shows the single biggest predictor of whether therapy helps is the therapeutic relationship between the two of you. When you trust your therapist, feel safe with them, and agree on what you’re working toward together, therapy works better. Feeling heard, safe, and understood, including in your identity and culture, is what makes the hard work of therapy possible. We do our best to find you a great match, and your input matters.
